NJALA Virtual Monthly Meeting and Educational Session

"A Delicate but Crucial Conversation: Talking About Depression and Suicide in the Workplace"

Presented by Daniel Sean Kaye

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that one in 10 American adults report having depression.  The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) says nearly 7 percent of American adults have major depressive disorder.  The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance says depression affects more than 23 million Americans annually.  The World Health Organization estimates about 350 million people worldwide have depression.

In this educational session, we will discuss depression and suicidal idolatry and how myths, outdated thinking and stereotypes need to be replaced.  We'll discuss "causes" of these illnesses (including chemical imbalances, genetics, stressors, brain injuries, faulty mood regulations, medications, etc.), how people hide the indicators, real-world ways to broach the subject, how anxiety plays into depression and ways managers can address these topics and support team members.

Daniel Sean Kaye is the Director of Life Enrichment and Community Engagement for Rydal Park, a Life-Plan Community for active seniors.  He is also an award-winning writer and editor, staff writer for magazines in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, writer/illustrator of two children's books and a cartoonist/illustrator.  Additionally, he is in his third term as an Abington School Board Director and serves on the board of several Philadelphia-area community nonprofit organizations.  A frequent writer and speaker about depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation, Daniel has been a sufferer of these conditions for nearly four decades.
