NJALA Monthly Meeting and Educational Session "From Blind Spots to Breakthroughs" Presented by Dr. Rebecca Heiss Humans have biological instincts, e.g., fight, flight, food, finding mates, built for survival in a world of scarcity and danger, in a limited habitat, within a local tribe; but we live in a world of abundance and relative safety, across nearly unlimited habitats, as part of a nearly limitless networked social existence. In other words, our instincts need an update. When biological instinct encounters the modern, developed context, it creates tension, often to the detriment of both the individual and his/her organization. Our brains (instinctually) are lazy, failing to engage in the meta-cognitive processes required to resolve these issues. Rather we revert back to subconscious strategies which fall short of relieving these tensions in an informed, science-driven manner. Rebecca's session explains the sabotaging effects of uninformed, instinctive behaviors carried out in a modern context. By empowering every individual and group to behave consciously in a contemporary world, she helps inspire everyone to rewrite the passive instincts that keep them locked into a toxic cycle of poor choices. Find out how these instincts are acting as barriers to your own optimal performance and happiness in work and in life. Key Outcomes & Takeaways After the presentation, participants will:
After earning her PhD with research designated as "transformative" by the National Science Foundation, Dr. Rebecca Heiss went on to hold multiple appointments in academia, applying her research to solve practical problems in overcoming what she refers to as "biological ghosts" - subconscious behaviors that haunt modern life. She founded a stress hormone consultation company, Biologic Balance, and is currently launching a new self-awareness, 360-review app, called Icueity, to help every individual reach his/her full potential. She has been honored to speak internationally on her work, including multiple TEDx talks, and has found her calling in helping others recognize the power of biological applications in their lives. Rebecca lives in South Carolina with her spoiled rotten dog named Bird, and tries every day to live her life motto: "spread happy".
